Studio Time – Learn and Save

If you want to make top quality recordings you will need professional studio time. A lot of factors play a role in categorizing your studio options and as always I recommend you record first in a home studio of any quality to help you visualize your music and make adjustment and idea shifts with out having to pay anyone. Also remember you can get rates lowered by booking blocks of time.

The three most common studios I find are….

  • Great Sounding Home Studios - This is an affordable and easy way to start getting music good enough to get some play. Usually they have flexible schedules and pricing. I would consider any studio that has fewer than 30k in equipment as well as an engineer that has not been to a recording school this category. These are usually mostly software based as hardware is expensive. Prices range from $FREE-99/hr to $20/hr.

  • Professional Home Studio – This starts with a professionally schooled engineer. They will have a lot more hardware including condenser microphones and external compressors. A lot of these engineers will have the ability to master your tracks as well. They will have a professional recording booth as well as professional monitor speakers and a MAC. Prices range from $20/hr up to $50/hr. I would not spend the money on this level of recording quality until you are confident your music as well as your budget is prepared.

  • Professional Studio – This is the top level in the game 100k plus in equipment including multiple recording rooms. It is not uncommon to have over $1,000,000 in equipment, not counting the usually exquisite lobby and such. What really makes this studio, as in any, is the quality of engineer present. This is someone with 10+ years in professional recordings on top of years of schooling. They will give you multiple mixes of one song, they master onsite as well as send your music to professional master only studio/engineers.

A couple platinum records on the wall are also an easy way to tell….duh. This is where you go if you already have a fan base, quality music, a business plan, and an investor.

The only draw back to recording your music at this level of professional quality is that if you do not fully understand the music business you will probably pay for this studio time out of your own pocket. Since Prices range from $40/hr up to $200+/hr it can significantly reduce your funding for other aspects of your music business .

In the end you do not need this level of quality to get a deal but once you have one this is the industry standard.
