L-Kick Stall
Tips

The L-kick can really get the crowd hype. Most of us have seen some version of this freeze. Probably during the one second clip Hollywood shows for any hip hop dance movie that has came out in the last ten years.

Make sure you stretch your wrist and hips before you attempt this move. It is considered an intermediate freeze. So make sure you learn this on somewhere with great padding.

To do this freeze you must be able to partially walk on your hands. You should be comfortable in a handstand and able to hold it for about thirty seconds.

You should start with your legs shoulder length apart

  • Place your right arm down to the ground as you swing your right leg up, followed by your left leg.

  • Make sure you put your right arm down with your fingers spread as far apart as possible. This gives you a better balance point. I like to place my hand on the ground and then squeeze the ground with my fingers tips to get a good grip. This technique was taught to me by B-boy Tiger years ago and it has always helped me.

  • Once you are balanced in a handstand keep your legs strait to the sky.

  • Now kick your left leg to the left of your body while concentrating on keeping your knees strait. At the same time you are going to be extending your left arm towards the toes of your left foot.

  • Try to focus on grabbing your left foot's toes with your left hand. Once you can grab your toes you are ready to start flexing. Tighten the muscles in your arm, back, and legs to hold this stall.

At first this may seem a little awkward but trust me you will have it down in no time. The key is all balance. Once you can actually L kick with some confidence you are ready to try some of the variations…

  • Keeping your right leg in tight.

  • Grabbing your right leg when it is behind your body

  • Placing your hand on your head.

  • Alternating L kicks while you walk

  • Grabbing both legs

  • Indian style

  • Spinning

  • Air Threading

  • The L-kick can be easily transferred into from step four of the six step. This makes it the perfect finish to a crispy flavor run. You can also back spring into it or my personal favorite swipe into it.

With all these variants and transitions the L-kick is one of breakdancing's most versatile freezes.
