There is a lot of different sounds to hip hop today and because of that there is a lot of variety in hip hop clothes and style.

Having done local shows for years I have seen a lot of dope artist come on stage and rip the mic like a million dollars only to get off stage and almost instantly disappear back into the crowd. When it comes to show time the most important tip I can give you is you want to stand out…

In a Good Way...

I remember this one time back in 2002-2003 I was doing some talent scouting for this TV studio off of E.260th called Lunn Productions. For a guy by the named of Alex Jones. He had heard thru mutual friends that I had this local tour with plenty of talent at my fingertips.

He told me he was interested in doing scouting for this TV show he was planning to do called "The Big Come Up". This was basically a hip hop version of American Idol. Now, I am sure that they where probably the 1,000,000th person to think of that idea…but it seemed like a good opportunity for local artist so I helped.

I invited about thirty local artist to the show's audition. Almost everyone I invited came and did their thing but the cat I remember the most I did not invite...To me he stuck out like an orange hat with a green bill because he looked more like an old navy commercial than a hip hop artist. He was dressed in a small pastel polo shirt and some slacks. He said his name was "Gemini".

When it was his turn to audition he got on stage and you could see from his body language he was very nervous. He very quickly apologized to the panel of judges. He said it was his first performance and he was not ready. Then he walked off stage and down the hall.

I chased him down and finally caught up with him in the hallway. I do not remember exactly what speech I gave him but whatever it was it must have been great because he went back in front of the judges and rocked it. I mean he did the best performance of all the auditions and I think a lot of it was due to the fact that the last fifteen acts all looked the same.

To this day I do not know If he was really nervous or an evil genius but one thing is for sure they put him down on the list to follow up on...

Hip Hop Clothes

If your shoes look like you found them on the way to the show you probably should have waited until you where fully prepared to perform. Your appearance on and off stage is a crucial part of your performance. Unfortunately, people will judge your character and your success based on your apparel but by knowing this you have the edge. You can decide how you want people to react to you.

The good news is MTV said they can wait a few weeks for your debut performance. This should give you just enough time to upgrade your style to official Champagne Quality.
