Cleveland Graffiti Tags
by Mr. Noneofyourbusiness

Graffiti tags come in all shapes and sizes, a tag is a simple to complicated variant style scrawling. This is accomplished with anything that writes. The art behind it is simply how creative/innovative a person can be with the type of tag. Marker tags (handstyles), glass etchings, stickers, airplane skywriting (if you can fly) fall in this category.

The Graffiti tag is quintessential for people who see it to recognize who you are. The tag is the cornerstone of a writer. It changes with time. It’s kinda like cheap promotion for something bigger to come. Important factors to consider with tagging:

  • Location – No churches, no schools, no homes, no burgeoning businesses (leave the lil’ guy’s stores alone. no family businesses. there are exceptions to this), Billboards, wall after wall, bridges, street signs, any high traffic area to strategically be “seen” is a go. Location is highly important since one wrong move will have every artist “hot” I.E. lets go tag up the police station. It’ll then be on the news and everyone associated will be man (or woman) hunted.

  • Method / Tools – Aerosol paint, house paint, inks, markers, wood burning, glass etching, acetylene torch. Really it’s up to you.

  • Style – Style will come with time or who you hang around with. Technique, precision, speed. all in due time.

In some cases, a graffiti tag can be seen as territorial. This is the case for gangs. A graffiti artist tags EVERYWHERE possible to gain fame.

But Mr. Noneofyourbusiness…HOW DO I TELL THE DIFFERENCE? you ask..

Well one of the best indicators is the quality of life in you’re area. Gangs use a lot of rough looking symbols that define who they are and where they at. If you are in an area high of violence, drugs, and dudes walking around in packs throwing up hand symbols to every passer-by, you probably got a gang problem. Gangs can spray paint on the wall just like the next guy. This is to let their presence be known to others that may try to infiltrate the underground economics of things.

The thing with tagging is that it can be addictive because as with some artists, it’s always a chance to get better, get up higher, or use some new paint to get that tag more pristine!

All in all, “Getting up” involves the practice of tagging, throw ups, burners, and doing eventually formal productions and actually progressing further with the art.
