A 1990 is basically a spinning one handed stand. If you can not picture please let me explain. Like most breakdance moves there is a couple basic maneuvers that make up the finished product, so lets take a closer look…
Think back to third grade and remember how to do a handstand. If your memory is hazy here is my version of a guide…
Handstand
Place hands on ground
Lift legs off ground
Once you have mastered standing on your hands and can do it, with-out falling for at least one minute, you are ready to move on to the next part of the equation.
Part two of this beautiful symphony is learning to walk in a circle, while standing on your hands, with your legs spread open. This sounds easy, but believe me, it takes a while to master. Flexibility, as always, plays a major factor here.
Once you are comfortable walking on your hands you are ready to add the technique and give your 90s their jazz. Lets try a slow motion version...
Basic 1990
Cross LEFT leg in Front of Right leg
Place LEFT hand on the ground
Shift weight to RIGHT hand
Balance Handstand
Kick to uncross legs
Push to the LEFT with your LEFT hand
Twist Hips and Shoulders
Once you can consistently spin 360 degrees you are ready to move on to the advanced 1990. The advanced 90 is the exact same as the basic move except for the way you kick into them.
The best way to get the most momentum is to start from the b-boy kick position (replace step 1). Your momentum is transferred from your kick upward and around. This extra speed and balance is what will allow you to do multiple rotations.
1990 Tips
Always stretch your wrists before you break
Balance is key
You should spin on the bottom corner of your palm
Keep your fingers off the ground
Kick into them quick
Try spinning with your knees bent
Once you have mastered 90's make sure to try some variations...
